Fixing or repairing a door lock may seem like a daunting task but it can be very simple to fix.
It should be noted that the locking mechanism on car doors is not the traditional pin tumbler lock.
The door lock assembly might be defective.
Tap the end of a chisel under the door stop on the striker side of the jamb.
Locate the screws holding the lock in place on the inside of the door.
Warping if the door cannot physically lock due to the frame or door being warped an adjustment of the strike plate could rectify the problem without the need of a new lock.
Remove these screws unscrew one side of the door knob and pull the door handle and lock assembly out of the door.
Use the chisel to remove the door stop.
Inspect the door lock for damage.
If the malfunctioning lock is in the door handle there will be at least two screws securing the door handle to the door.
Pry up on it until it comes loose and remove it.
If the door lock is damaged replace it.
